First issue of "The Egocentrist" publishedTerschuur - the first edition of The Egocentrist was published today on elmelijn.livejournal.com. The chronicle, which is to appear daily, or as often as the editor feels the urge, brings news and backgrounds about the life of the editor, Hilde, in a professional newspaper style. For as far as our sources go, this is the first official lj-based newspaper. In an exclusive interview with The Egocentrist, Hilde explains her ideas and her plans.
Exclusive interview with head editor: "This is my way of playing at my strenghts"So how does a plain seventeen-year-old girl from the depths of The Netherlands get the idea to write a newspaper - all by and about herself?
The idea for The Egocentrist, Hilde admits, was born fairly quickly. "I was cycling to town," she retells the tale, "when it struck me how boring my lj actually is. It's just news about me, stated as plain, boring facts. I must be able to put that into a more interesting, appealing form." Why exactly she thought of the newspaper form Hilde cannot say for sure. "I guess newspapers just appeal to me," she said mysteriously. She is not unfamiliar with them, writing columns for a newspaper and even having edited a full-blown, one-edition newspaper herself about her school class departing.
But this newspaper is supposed to be all about herself.
"People always say that you should play at your strengths," Hilde explains the purpose of The Egocentrist. "Well, I wanted to write a news paper, and what on earth do I know more about than about myself? So, I myself am to be the subject.
"I am not quite sure if there is a market for me-news," she adds, introducing the additional term with which she describes the purpose and content of The Egocentrist. "But I am sure I will find out soon enough. Main objective for now is that I am enjoying myself."
In the meantime, Hilde has formed great plans for The Egocentrist. "I want at least daily updates," she boasts. "I think there is enough to tell about me. It may start with an ordinary what-have-I-done today, but I am planning on including more deep-digging articles on philosophical ideas, social injustices and everything else that keeps the mind busy when scooping ice cream."
Her lack of familiarity with the English language will not present too much of an obstacle, Hilde guarantees. "My readers know that I am not a shining light when it comes to English. And I believe that trying and writing English will eventually improve my skills, and the lapses and mistakes that come with the process - well, my readers will just have to put up with that!"
